WHERE FASHION MEETS ART.........
The inauguration of Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry´s Guggenheim Museum in 1997 has served as the key ingredient in Bilbao´s profound redevelopment. Attracting over a million visitors per year, Bilbao is now a reference point for foreign tourism in northern Spain. In the area known as New Bilbao, with both the Guggenheim and the Bellas Artes museums practically on its doorstep, the ¨arts-inspired¨ Miróhotel could not be more ideally situated for those wishing to experience Bilbao´s urban buzz and, of course, its ever-increasing reputation for style.
Upon entering the Hotel you will first be greeted by its stylish interior; a concept created by fashion designer Antonio Miró. The dynamic design, with its chic black marble floors, dramatic lighting and warm cream-coloured walls, accompanied by soft chill-out music, sets the tone for your stay. Next to greet you: the young and enthusiastic staff, whose energy is completely in tune with the charisma of the Hotel. Their personalised service with a smile is very refreshing! Whether it be the fantastic photography collection that adorns the walls, or the warm glow that emenates from BAR MIRÓ opposite reception, your eye will be wandering in curiosity.
Miró Hotel has 50 spacious, bright bedrooms, divided amongst Singles, Doubles (some twin), Junior Suites and Deluxe Junior Suites. Their modern and functional design (not to mention the super soft sheets and mohair blankets) make for a comfortable stay. The black, cream and white colour scheme continues, with brilliant red cushions on the beds for a splash of colour. All beds are king-size (with the exception of the twins, and single rooms which have double beds). Bathrooms, all of which feature superb large showers, except the Junior and Deluxe Junior Suites which have both shower and bath, are semi-open plan in order to make the most of the natural light. Intimacy, however, is not foresaken as the toilets are in a separate room. The Hotel has a fully adapted room for wheelchair access.
The Urban Double and Single rooms are on the interior of the hotel, and the rest of the rooms are on the exterior (windows are double-glazed to help reduce street noise). For views of the Guggenheim, go for a Deluxe Double room. For something extra special, I recommend the Deluxe Junior Suites on the top floor of the Hotel, plus by booking this room you get complimentary access to the Hotel's Wellness Centre. The interior rooms are very quiet, albeit without views. Rooms are equipped with flat screen TV, DVD and sound system (choose from a selection of 200 DVDs available for daily rental; CDs are free to borrow), free Wi-Fi and ADSL internet access, individual heating and air-con, safe, well-stocked mini-bar, bathrobes, slippers and hairdryer.
Miró´s snazzy breakfast buffet room, with its black carpeting and white tables and matching chrome-trimmed chairs, will have you starting your day in style.
Whilst the Hotel does not have a restaurant, there are excellent dining options in the vicinity on which the friendly receptionist will happily advise. For lighter fare, BAR MIRÓ offers a variety of salads, snacks and finger foods throughout the day. Do try a cocktail – they are the house specialty. Room service is available 24 hours, with a few options available after 11:00pm. Live in-house jazz sessions are a treat on the last Thursday of every month.
An ideal citybreak Hotel if you are looking for stylish accommodation with superb service. Shuttle service can be arranged and valet parking is also available. Whether by taxi or by car, Miróhotel is easily accessible from both Bilbao´s airport and port....just follow the signs to the Guggenheim!
